The Science of Art

  • In the Summer of 2021, we asked Sam to teach science. She was a lit teacher and has previously studied design...so, we created the Science of Art.

  • Her entire unit was based on the idea that the students would combine learning about and applying aesthetics and science concepts.

  • She did an exceptional job of building this unit, and her lab reports were critical to her success.

The Premise

  • The students are working in several small design teams (3-4 students each)

  • For each new project, each design team is presented with a new challenge - the same challenge for each group.

  • The challenge combines a science problem with aesthetic requirements.

  • Students receive a lab report with the pertinent information.

  • Sam introduces the necessary concepts and students utilize that information to make scientific and aesthetic decisions.

The Scientific Method

  • You will see the stages of the scientific method being utilized throughout the lab report.

  • Another step - presenting the findings, would take place at the end of each project - it became the goal.

  • Each design team had to present their product to the client (often me). The client decides if the team has met the challenge and which team has produced the best product.

  • Students were excited to share their findings with the client and were tasked with answering the client's questions, proving their understanding of the concepts.

Observations

While looking at the labs, consider:
  • In what ways do these labs create consistency, especially in terms of process?

  • In what ways are these labs demonstrating Sam's adult organization and thinking?

  • How do these labs demonstrate purpose and intention in Sam's plans and thinking?

  • What objectives and goals are these labs helping students to reach?

  • In what ways might these labs be utilized in multiple activities including warm ups, wrap ups, and homework?
