Considerations for Unit Planning

Planning a unit is not an easy task. Unit planning takes patience, forethought, vision, and an understanding of where you want students to end up.

Planning like this type takes practice. The below document provides items that you need to consider prior to starting your planning process.

The purpose of creating a unit plan is to help you think through what you want students to accomplish and how you will help them to achieve the goals you have set for them.

I have created unit plan template for you to use that should help you to think through a series of considerations that are not only important to unit planning but to creating your online unit.

It is important that you think through the end goals and objectives when planning a unit so that you can work backwards through your unit to day 1. Planning a unit is much like a complicated math problem. Each step must lead clearly into the next. By starting at the end point, it might help you to think through all of the necessary steps that will allow your students to arrive at your end goals.

The progression from one day to the next, one week to the next, and one topic to the next should be clear to you, and it should be clear to the students. It is important that you are all walking the same path together, moving in the same direction, with a clear understanding of why you are moving that way.

Below the template, you will find an example that shows you the level of work I expect. The example is made for a science/forensics unit, but will give all subjects an idea of what to do.

You need to put some real thought into completing this unit plan. A strong plan is going to pay dividends when you go to complete your lesson plans and videos.

When filling in the calendar, please make sure to follow my example and put videos at the top of the day and resources at the bottom.
