• Doing one of these activities should be helpful in you all getting to know one another and breaking some of the nervousness or tension.

Pre-Reading Activities

• Select one of the following pre-reading activities to complete with the students during your first session

• This first session will set the stage for the rest of the program.

• You can use these activities even if a student (or more) has read the book already. You can easily modify so that they don't share major spoilers but can still think critically about what they are about to re-read.

ELA Concepts

• Each session, you will focus on a new ELA concept.

• Use that concept to guide you and your discussion that week.

• Just because you focus on one item doesn't mean you can't talk about others that week.

• Share out the concept with students, tell them it will be the guiding idea for the session, see if they can define the idea, and provide the definition for them
