Lesson Planning

  • When planning, remember, the most important question you need to ask yourself is: what do I want students to know or be able to do by the end of this lesson.

  • You want to ask that same question for activities.

  • Each part of your lesson, each activity should have a clear educational purpose.

  • If you do something simply because you think it will be fun, then you are not doing your job.

Activity - Lesson Plan

Instructional Procedure

  • Brainstorming (7 mins)
    • Individual (sheet)
    • Pair - share out

  • Web diagram (10 mins)
    • Come back together
    • Does anyone know what a web diagram is?
    • Does anyone know why we use a web diagram?
    • Group share out - talking to the text.
    • What is a text?

  • Talking to the Text Handout (5 mins)
    • We are going to use this handout and the web diagram we just did to help us talk to the text and do some pre-reading for our book.

  • Pre-Reading (13 mins)
    • Handout sheet
    • I will read aloud while you read along silently
    • Now, you read silently and talk to the text.

  • Share Out (10 mins)
    • What facts do we know based on our reading?
    • What inferences can we make?
    • How do you know these inferences are valid?
    • What are some questions you have about the book so far?
    • What are some predictions we can make about the conflict and why?
    • What are some connections we made?

Reflection - What Can You Emulate?

  • What did I do in this lesson that you might want to emulate?

  • Notice the level of detail and the questioning that takes place throughout.

  • Notice the time students have to engage their prior knowledge, get on the same page as a class, work through ideas, learn new concepts, practice new concepts, and analyze the text through pre-reading.

  • Notice the homework can be utilized in the next day's warm up. Students will put their post its on the board in a column of the same category. They will select other people's and answer the questions and make comments. We will share out and move into discussing the chapters or doing an activity.

  • This kind of lesson sets the stage for the rest of the unit - students are learning a skill they will utilize throughout the unit, the school year, and in other classes.
