Writing Objectives

  • Revisit Goals vs. Objectives and how to measure an objective

  • Writing strong objectives starts with you knowing what goals you have for students.

  • What do you want students to know or be able to do by the end of the school year, the end of this unit, the end of this day, the end of this lesson, the end of this activity?

  • Every thing you do in your classroom should build (in small part) toward achieving those larger goals.

Important Note

  • When you read your list of objectives, there should be a clear flow from one to the next.

  • There should be a clear progression from lower to higher order thinking.

  • If the define item comes after the create item, something is off in the flow of your lesson.

  • Remember, scaffolding matters - you have to bring them up the steps one at a time and in order.

  • Important Note - when you use an objective like create it should be higher order. If you write - students will create a poster -- if what they are doing is transposing information from one place to a poster, that is not creating. That is transposing. That is lower order thinking. If you were teaching marketing students the principals of design then - students will create a poster using the principals of design is higher order thinking.

  • Other examples - students will create a budget plan utilizing their salary calculations and wants and needs chart. Students will create a myth to explain a natural phenomenon using a unique character and the elements of a myth.
